The first trailer for Ocean’s 8, previously called Ocean’s Eight and previously, previously called Ocean’s Ocho, is here.
As we already knew from wildly early promotion and super cool posters, Ocean’s 8 stars an all-star ensemble cast of Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Sarah Paulson, and Helena Bonham Carter.
The trailer positions Sandra Bullock’s character at the helm of a new heist crew anchored, it seems, by Cate Blanchett. Mindy Kaling plays a jewelry expert, Rihanna a mysterious hacker type, Sarah Paulson a reluctant mom, and Awkwafina plays a street-smart hustler. The target is Anne Hathaway’s character, or more specifically, her $150,000,000 necklace.
The film is a twist on Steven Soderbergh’s early aughts heist series (Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, Ocean’s Thirteen), a trilogy in which the crew pulling off the central “impossible” caper grew by one person each time. A terrible premise, but some pretty entertaining movies! Soderbergh is only a producer on Ocean’s 8, which was directed by Pleasantville and The Hunger Games director Gary Ross. It was co-written by Ross and Dude writer Olivia Milch.
Confusingly, given the traditional sequencing of numbers, Ocean’s 8 is a sequel to the George Clooney and Brad Pitt-led Ocean’s movies. The “Ocean” in the title, is Bullock, who plays a character named Debbie Ocean, the “estranged sister” of Clooney’s Danny Ocean. Unfortunately, Matt Damon — who appeared in all three of Soderbergh’s films and has recently been talking a lot about things he doesn’t care to understand — will be reprising his role in a cameo performance.
Due out next June, Ocean’s 8 will be released 11 years after the final installment of the original series. It will probably make a lot of money, which is cool, except if Warner Bros. wants to make more than a couple sequels they’re going to have to skip from Ocean’s 10 to Ocean’s 14?
