Chrono Trigger just got a surprise release on Steam

One of the greatest role-playing games of all time is now available on PC. Today, Square Enix unexpectedly launched Chrono Trigger on Steam, with an updated version of the SNES classic that will include a handful of welcome features and additions.

The PC version of Chrono Trigger will include what the developer describes as “optimized visuals designed for modern PCs,” as well as a re-recorded soundtrack that was supervised by original composer Yasunori Mitsuda. It will also include the two bonus dungeons that came with the Nintendo DS and mobile versions of the game, and a much-welcome autosave feature. Additionally, those who purchase the game before April 2nd will get a few bonuses, including digital liner notes from Mitsuda, a digital five-song medley, and a handful of high-definition wallpapers.

Chrono Trigger debuted in 1995 on the Super Nintendo, and was created by an all-star team of developers, including Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, and Akira Toriyama, best known for his work on Dragon Ball. While today represents the game’s debut on PC, it’s previously been ported to a number of platforms, including the original PlayStation, Nintendo DS, iOS, and Android. You can check out the Steam version here.
