Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale is leaving behind the existing narrative of the novel it’s based on and moving into uncharted territory. The finale of the first season saw Offred (Elisabeth Moss) find freedom — or perhaps not — as she left behind the home where she once served as a Handmaid. “There probably is no out,” Offred intones in the latest trailer. “Gilead is within you.”
It’s hard to say where the show will go now, as the events of Margaret Atwood’s original novel of the same name have mostly played out. The trailer features a glimpse at Offred’s friend Moira, who managed to escape to Canada, the Commander and his wife arguing over the repercussions of Offred’s disappearance, and many more familiar faces. The video is garnished with darker shots of group hangings, Handmaids in training, and what appears to be the colonies, the ruined areas of North America where prisoners are sent to do often dangerous menial labor.
Season 2 premieres on Hulu April 25th. Its first season was a hit with critics; both the show and many of its actors won Emmys during last year’s award season.
